In college, Eric played three seasons for the North Carolina Tar Heels, where he started in 21 of 34 career games. Surpassing previous all-time tight end record of 94 catches by Zack Pianalto, Eric set school records for tight ends with 112 receptions for 1,805 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2013, Ebron’s 973 receiving yards set a new ACC record for single-season receiving yards by a tight end, breaking Vernon Davis’ (Maryland) record of 871 in 2005. Eric studied Communication Studies at North Carolina.

After his three-year career at North Carolina, Eric was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Eric is well known for his massive frame and “quick on his feet” movement to move down the field – which is what the Lions were so attracted to. Eric was the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and is one of only four tight ends to be drafted in the first round, since 2009.

On March 19, 2018, Eric signed with the Indianapolis Colts on a two-year deal. In Week 5 of the 2018 season, against the New England Patriots, he recorded nine receptions for a career-high 105 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in the 38–24 loss.
